  • The 3 year trial involved classes from 2 consecutive years,
  • The trial covered each the 2 year period of their GCSE course.
  • Learners from the lowest attaining set close the learning gap.
  • In many cases learners over take their peers in the set above within a year.
  • The trials were for a half term (6 to 8 weeks)
  • The groups were the lowest attaining maths learners in year 7 or 8 
  • Learners retain many times the new learning in intervention v regular maths lessons
  • Groups of 5 to 9 learners in intervention versus 19 to 22 in maths lessons

A valid criticism of our research is the small sample size.

We had a few problems, lockdown and an upgrade to our data base, but we decided to use this as an opportunity to upgrade timely practice to

  • be able to be used in more situations e.g. alternative provision, small group intervention etc
  • be able to be used by teachers and teaching assistants who are not maths specialists,
  • be quicker to begin to use,
  • be able to compare progress with classes/ parts of the year where the same class, with the same teacher teaches with/without timely practice.

We still offering free trials in the academic year 2022-23 in exchange for comparative data for the following categories:-

  • a shorter term trial comparing retained learning gain with business as usual lessons (for 3 to 6 weeks) and timely practice (for the same duration)
    • assessing current learning in the topics to be taught,
    • teaching some units using the school's existing teaching and assessment regimen,
    • teaching other units as advised by timely practice, and using timely practice to schedule regular retrieval practice,
    • assessing the retained learning at least 6 weeks after the last teaching/school's regular assessment of the units of the trial, to calculate the retained learning gain
  • a GCSE retake trial - comparing grade grain with past cohorts and current cohort
