What a topic is and how it is represented and used within the app

What is a topic?

A topic is a themed sequence of layermaths topic such as expand

A topic is made up of a number of "small bites" of learning called layers.

The strands layers within the topic are numbered, with 1 being the easiest.

The skills/knowledge/methods from strand layer 1 are sometimes required for strand layer 2 and sometimes the skills/knowledge/methods for strand layer 1 is unconnected but easier than those for strand layer 2.

Some topics have only a few strandslayers, some have many. The topic stem and leaf has 3 strands and BIDMAS currently has 2 layers and  value of (: index) - pdf & mp4 has 15 strandslayers.

You can find examples of the kind of questions for each strand layer from a pdf document. See learning resourcesfor  for a list of all of thesethe topics.

The topic calculator skills has 8 strandslayers

The skills and knowledge from strand layer 1, strand layer 2 and strand layer 3 are required to learn strand layer 4.

The skills/knowledge/method from correct to strand layer 2  e.g. " Write 637.647 correct to 1 decimal place." is required for calculator skills strand layer 6 (calculatorSkills6.pdf)

The strand layer number gives an indication of the level within a topic but not between topics.

For example add strand layer 4 - adding two double digits, is easier than ratio strand layer 1 sharing an amount of money into a given ratio.
