Definition

Finding and firming learning foundations is what we call the process of pre assess and the first time of teaching of each topic using timely practice.

When the teacher returns to teach the topic a second time we call this teaching on firm learning foundations.

...

Auto pre assess

It takes time to build up an accurate picture of each learners depth of learning on each "bite" (layer) of each topic.

hile the teacher is building up information, the teacher can continue to teach the learners, with the assistance of timely practice, but  This is what the finding and forming learning foundations is.

Initially we find that

...

  • the teacher when planning what to teach to the class on a topic

...

  • either increase the learners independence and accuracy to mastery for layers which they know "quite a bit of" (i.e. ensure the learner would get full marks in an exam)
  • or decide that some layers are "best learned later" i.e. it is better use of teacher and learner lesson time to teach this work later.

...

The auto pre assess function, takes the scheme of learning (SOL) entered by the teacher and works behind the scenes pre assessing each topic.

When the teacher looks at the topic from plan teach and sees only grey, white and light blue (no longer grey blue) boxes, then the topic is fully pre assessed.

The colour code is as follows

  • white layers are layers we know the learner doesn’t know yet,

  • grey layers are layers the app hasn’t asked about,

  • bright blue layers are layers the learners already know,

  • grey-blue layers mean the app is part way through pre assessing the topic.

Plan teaching the first curriculum spiral

At the moment the app is doing 2 round pre assess, so some (grey) layers are not pre assessed (because they are less important and because asking questions would give hints to answer other questions).

  • If a grey layer has 2 blue layers above it - the teacher doesn’t need to teach the grey layer

  • If a white layer has some blue layers above it - the teacher should probably teach the white layer

  • If a white or grey layer is above a couple of blue layers - then this is usually the layer to teach next

Plan teaching additional curriculum spirals

Once all the topics that the learner can learn at the moment, have been pre assessed and taught, the finding and firming learning foundations process is finished. The next time the teacher teaches the topics

How long does the finding and firming learning foundations phase last?

The finding and firming learning foundations phase can last between a few weeks (very low attaining learners) and a little over a term (higher attaining learners).
