timely practice teacher training - general intro and spaced learning

Complete questions 1 to 3 of the quiz

(1) In your opinion is "Following a good revision program is more beneficial than cramming before an exam"?

............................................................................................................................................................................

(2) Complete these sentences by selecting from the following

use the words/phrases in bold

blocked learning (after teaching - practice questions concentrated shortly after teaching)

spaced learning  (after teaching - practice questions spread out over a long time period)

pre assess (also known as formative assessment - finding out what the learners know before teaching)

testing (also known as summative assessment - finding out what the learners know some time after teaching)

blocked SOL (most topics taught, at most once a year)

more spiralled SOL (most topics taught several times a  year)

(a) In an effective revision program

The student decides what they need to learn - this is ........................................................

The student splits up what they will revise into smaller blocks and space these out over their revision program - this is  ........................................................

The student reviews frequently what they have learned to ensure they have retained their learning - this is  ........................................................

(b) Whereas with cramming

The student may or may not plan what they need to revise.

The student will revise each topic in one session - this is  ........................................................

The student will practice what they have learned on each topic, if at all, within a short period of time - this is  ........................................................

(c) Thinking now of your department's scheme of learning - say for year 8 lower attaining students.

Each topic is taught typically for ......... hours, normally each topic is studied  ........ time(s) per year - this is  ........................................................

The students revisit each topic to practise more questions on the topic typically ....... time(s) per year - this is  ........................................................

The teacher ( may / must ) pre assess each topic and this is normally done ( lesson by lesson / unit by unit ).

(3) How many schools/colleges do have some knowledge of the SOL for maths?   ...... (include as a student)

In how many of these was

(a) the spacing of teaching within the SOL markedly different from your current school?  ......

(b) the spacing of the practice questions markedly different from your current school?  ......

Quiz answers

(2c) You decide is your school's curriculum most like an effective revision program or cramming?

(3) Feel free to tell us

forgetting

Hermann Ebbinghaus  - in 1885 - systematically studied forgetting. He found as time goes by, memory fades unless ...  we practice/review.

By a practice question or by reviewing - before we have forgotten - we extend the time before we will remember for. This is spaced learning.

spaced learning - using forgetting to help remember

Key:  very weak through to very good memory

Each vertical line is brought about by a practice question/or by trying to recall i.e. reviewing.

The practice/review extends the duration of the memory most if we wait until we would soon forget, before we practice/review.

Waiting for longer each time between one practice and the next is called increasing interval retrieval practice or a spaced repetition system (SRS)
