Does teaching with timely practice embed significantly more learning than teaching following our
current scheme of learning and program of study?

Overview of the trial

  • will be pre assessed in fine detail using timely practice app - to find which layers (bites of learning) within each suitable topic each learner already knows,
  • the pre assess will be verified by asking the learners a second question on all the layers which the learners "seemed to know already" ,
  • will be taught following the existing scheme of learning and using the existing lesson resources etc.
  • will be post assessed following the schools existing regimen (often schools set an end of unit test) or not (some schools do not),
  • will be assessed (again) in the "delayed summative assessment"  after the agreed wait of 4 or 6 weeks - this will be used to calculate the learning gain using the school's existing teaching and assessment regimen NB no revision must be done, nor prior notice be given to the learners, because we want to find out what they retain of their learning (see "Fair?" (info) box at the bottom of the page for more information)

  • timely practice recommends a breadth first scheme of learning e.g. only one small bite of new learning from several topics, most topics taught several times a year (as this two term trial will do)
    • only one layer per topic will be taught per term, 
    • usually only one lesson will be allocated to teach each topic,
  • teachers will teach as many topics form the topic theme that the learners are ready to learn (i.e. will apply mastery learning) the SOL will build on the firm learning foundations found in the pre assess process - it is likely that the scheme of learning we create will forgo some topics e.g. correct to (because the learners don't have the appropriate pre requisite skills), but include other simpler support topics e.g. rounding ready and place value skills in e.g. place value: integer and x/÷ by 10/100/1000, 
  • there will be no post assess at the end of the unit - although the teacher may choose to print out the learners progress page, so the learners may see what they have learned, if end of unit tests are the norm for the school,
  • will be assessed "delayed summative assessment" after a wait of at least 4, ideally 6 weeks as agreed - this will be used to calculate the learning gain using the school's existing teaching and assessment regimen,
  • NB the learners will continue practising and getting feedback on a maximum of 5 6 questions per lesson between the last teaching of the topic theme and the "delayed summative assessment" this will occur in 10 minutes of most BAU units - which are allocated two extra teaching days to compensate (see limited topic trial for more details on this)
  • will be assessed by the "delayed summative assessment"  after the agreed wait of 4 or 6 weeks - this will be used to calculate the learning gain using the timely practice assessment regimen NB no revision must be done, nor prior notice be given to the learners, because we want to find out what they retain of their  learning (see "Fair?" (info) box at the bottom of the page for more information)

Program of study and assessment for this trial

  • It is likely that in the pre assess of a BAU unit we find considerably fewer layers which the learners "already know" than in the pre assess of a timely practice topic theme (TPTT) because:
    • The BAU unit is likely to be made up of less than 5 topics but the TPTT may cover teach 10 or more than 10 topics
    • The aim of the TP pre assess trial and improvement process is to find 2 consecutive layers per topic which the learner already knows - so the teacher knows they have found each learners firm learning foundations

It may at first seem unfair for the TP topics to continue to be practised after teaching - but this models the timely practice system regimen - here is the justification:

For a final summative test such as GCSE exam it is not possible to revise every thing from every topic the day before the exam - which is why neither the BAU units nor the TP topic themes must be revised before their "delayed summative assessment".

However it is perfectly possible to do a 10 Q or 15 Q timely practice assignment every day up until the day before the final GCSE exam (and get any help or feedback on any skills the learners need).

For our small scale trial a 5Q 6Q timely practice assignment may be completed and fed back the lesson before the "delayed summative assessment". Optionally, the learners can complete another timely practice assignment to allow the teacher time to feedback, or the teacher can set a warm up question on the white board and tell the learners there are no practice questions the app needs them to complete today. The key thing is not to give the game away about the imminent "delayed summative assessment".
