Please make sure you have read Beginning timely practice (read this first)
The document Beginning timely practice (what to do) will lead the teacher through the process of finding and firming learning foundations which may take between a few days to a term (the more the students learners know the longer it takes). Once this process is done the teacher moves on to teaching on firm learning foundations.

- set up a new class
- add students learners from a spreadsheet
- add students learners to a class one by one (see add an extra studentlearner)
Adding topics and layers
A new class starts with no topics, topics can be added to a class, as and when the teacher is ready.
When a topic is added to a class, no layers are set. Setting of layers is done within Progress on Topiclearner has any "layers learning".
There are two ways to set add layers pre assess and teach
- if layers are set to when we set a layer to be "pre assess" they will be added to the next pre assess assignment (the app will fast track these layers if the student "already knows" the layer)if layers are set to "teach" they will be added to the next timely practice assignment (if space)-assessed" (1 click) layers the learner already knows are fast tracked
- when we set a layer as "taught" (click, pause, click) the layers will not be fast tracked
The layers can be set to the whole class or a single student.See set layer to "pre assess" or "teach" for the whole class or a single studentlearner.
Assignments
The teacher creating, the students learners doing and the teacher assessing personalised assignments is the way that the timely practice app interacts with the real world. There are 2 main types of assignment pre assess and timely practice. There are two types of timely practice assignment Classwork and Homework.
...
- pre assess - finding out in fine detail what students learners already know to enable more efficient teaching and learning to happen - this is one of the functions of assessment for learning.
- timely practice - has 2 functions
- primary function - to ensure learning is retained and embedded but readily accessible within student learner memory, in a form which enables the student learner to use and apply what they have learned to answer questions. The timely practice app uses retrieval practice or spaced learning to do this. Within the process of embedding learning assessment for learning must necessarily occur and the teacher may use the colour of depth of blue of the students learners lozenge for a layer to judge the depth of learning and so decide when learning has been mastered - that is "firm enough" foundations for future learning.
- secondary function - to enable "tutoring" via feedback between the teacher and the student learner when teaching has not yet become learning.

- Low Stakes (regular) - this has a friendly font and includes spaces for student learner workings
- Low stakes (paper saving) - this has a friendly font but does not include spaces for student learner workings
- Formal Review (use rarely) - this looks like a test with a more formal font and marks written beside the answer line - as it says use rarely - maximum 1 per half term.

assess assignments
The assessment of the two types of assignments are slightly different, since they fulfil different roles
- assess a pre assess assignment - broad brush stroke assessment encouraged:
- ✔︎ - the student learner seems to "already know" this or
- bin - best learned later
- assess a timely practice assignment - slightly finer detail assessment:
- ✔︎ - independent and accurate,
- ~ - not quite,
★ - student learner has had or needs feedback or
- bin - "best learned later"

There are two ways to see student learner progress
- Progress on Topic which shows in fine detail the progress of the whole class in just one topic. It allows the teacher to set layers to pre assess or teach.
- Student Learner's Progress Page which shows in fine detail the progress of just one student learner on every topic. It allows the teacher to view summary information about the student learner's progress on any layer within any topic. It also allows the teacher to delete any layer (unless the layer is currently within an assignment). It is found by clicking on the studentlearner's name in Progress on Topic.
